Out of the Ashes – HMAT Khyber brings them home
Acrylic
84 x 123cm
Off the NSW Central Coast, a converted cargo ship brings Australians home from hell. WW1 is over. Ashore on a Bouddi headland, our heroes are welcomed by flannel flowers pushing up through the devastation of a bush fire, a uniquely Australian symbol of ‘never say die’ hope and renewal. I saw the beauty of flowers growing out of the ashes as an analogy for the new beginnings of the men and women aboard the HMAT KHYBER.
