Threads of a Forgotten Yarn

Mixed Media – Eucalyptus Oil Transfer on Vintage Hand Embroidered Linen Handkerchiefs

30 x 80cm

Historically embroidered handkerchiefs have been expressions of love and hope, and soldiers were known to carry them as tokens of good luck from their loved ones and as reminders of home.

The opening lines from Duncan Butler’s ‘Mates Poem’ from WW2 sit alongside images from my father’s personal photographs from his WW2 experience where he served in Borneo and later in the Occupational Forces in Japan.

The use of Eucalyptus Oil in my process is a nod to our gum trees which are synonymous with the Australian landscape, and the images of those quintessential Aussie mates gathering for a smoko and a yarn, demonstrates the importance of mateship and love of Australia.
